Frequently asked questions
WHAT IS A TRIGGER POINT?
A hyperirritable spot in the skeletal muscle that produces pain locally or referred. Acute trauma or repetitive microtrauma may lead to the development of stress on muscle fibers & the formation of trigger points.
WHY DOES MY THERAPIST RECOMMEND DRINKING WATER AFTER A MASSAGE?
Massage leaves you dehydrated, due to which both circulation systems, blood, and lymphatic system become sluggish. The lymphatic system in particular isn’t able to do its job of carrying toxins out of your body, leading to a toxic build-up, and defeating the purpose of getting a detoxifying massage.
CAN I WORK OUT AFTER A MASSAGE?
After receiving a massage, it sets your mind & body to relax mode. It’s best to let it continue in that state of being instead of ‘waking them up’. Doing any kind of strenuous activity like going to the gym, can injure your muscles.
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE SESSION TIME?
A session consists of time for you to dress & undress if it's a massage service, time to communicate with the therapist to make your session truly customized. This is to ensure each session meets your expectations.
WHAT IF THE PRESSURE IS NOT ENOUGH OR TOO MUCH, BUT I DON’T WANT TO COMPLAIN, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Communicate any concerns with your therapist if there is anything they can do to make you more comfortable, such as pain, discomfort, or applying more pressure. Some types of massage that work on deep layers of muscle & tissue, such as deep tissue or sports massage, will require more feedback to ensure that the pressure is not uncomfortable.
SHOULD I TAKE OFF MY UNDERWEAR WHEN I GET A MASSAGE?
This depends on your comfort level & the type of massage you are going to receive. For sports massage & stretching, you may be asked to leave some of your clothing on. While for Swedish massage, Deep Tissue, or Hot Stone Massage most people get completely nude while others prefer to keep their undergarments on. It’s completely up to you & you’re encouraged to undress to your level of comfort.
Tight-fitting or bulky undergarments can sometimes get in the way of the massage, especially if your problem areas are the low back, buttocks, or hips.
Massage therapists must ensure that clients are always properly covered by sheet or towel, genitals will never be exposed, & only the areas being worked on will be uncovered.
WHAT IF I GET AROUSED OR GET AN ERECTION DURING MY MASSAGE
arousal is a natural parasympathetic response, so don’t feel guilty. However, understand that it was not your massage therapist’s intention to arouse you. Our professional ethical code of conduct requires us to make sure boundaries are clear. If there is a distracting technique or motion(i.e. rocking the prone torso)that aroused you, it’s okay to tell your therapist to stop that motion. There is a zero-tolerance policy & any sexual advances, innuendo, or inappropriate touching is grounds for immediate termination of your session
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET A MASSAGE?
There are no standard guidelines for the number of massages you can get however your massage therapist will be able to recommend a frequency and duration that work best for your needs based on the type of massage you want and area you want to target.
Massages for injury or chronic issues are typically more frequent, while massages for pampering or relaxation can occur less often.
Massage for General Health & Relaxation
For general health & relaxation massages are recommended 1-2 times a month for people under light to moderate stress. Receiving massage therapy once or twice a month can have excellent health benefits & helps reduce the effects of stress.
Massage for Stress Management
People in high-stress occupations or living conditions, or frequent travelers, a higher frequency of massage treatments, weekly or bi-weekly, is recommended. Tension build-up from stressful situations can be more easily managed with weekly massage.
Massage Therapy for Pain Reduction and Management
Reduction of and management of pain requires a different type of frequency. People with severe pain not requiring medical intervention can and do receive massage therapy 1-3 times in the first week. However rare, this type of frequency may continue for the second & third week of treatment, depending on how the client responds to the therapy being received.
WHAT IS PEMF THERAPY?
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. Local & targeted PEMF therapy directly stimulates electrical activity within the muscle tissues “the field” interacts with. Think of charging a battery but instead you are charging your cells! The BEMER Mat is a non-invasive device and is intended to stimulate healthy muscles and to temporarily increase local blood flow in healthy muscles. Better supply of oxygen, better supply of nutrients and better disposal of waste.
WHAT IF I’VE EXPERIENCED A TRAUMA( OR ABUSE) THAT IS STILL TRIGGERED BY TOUCH? SHOULD I LET MY THERAPIST KNOW?
You should absolutely let your massage therapist know if you do not want to be touched in specific area or in a certain way. You don’t have to disclose any details & you have the right to terminate the session or take a break from your session.
